UK Airport Umrah Prayer and Travel Index

A pilot HajjGuider index comparing UK airport practicality for Umrah travellers, including prayer facilities, routes, family travel, accessibility, and community input.

  • Pricing

The UK Airport Umrah Prayer and Travel Index is a HajjGuider pilot project comparing how practical different UK airports are for Umrah travellers.

Most airport comparisons focus on price or flight availability. Pilgrims also care about prayer facilities, family travel, elderly support, journey time, baggage stress, onward transport, and how easy it is to manage ihram, salah, children, and long connections.

This page sets out the scoring framework before the first full index is published. We are inviting mosques, ISocs, airport teams, local travel groups, and frequent Umrah travellers to send corrections, tips, and practical observations.

What the index will compare

  • Prayer room availability and ease of access
  • Route practicality for Jeddah or Madinah travel
  • Direct and one-stop flight options
  • Family and elderly traveller practicality
  • Accessibility and walking strain inside the airport
  • Rail, coach, parking, and drop-off convenience
  • Nearby Muslim communities and common departure cities
  • Crowd stress during school holidays and Ramadan periods
  • Practical notes for ihram, baggage, and long layovers

Candidate airports

The first pilot version may include:

  • London Heathrow
  • London Gatwick
  • Manchester
  • Birmingham
  • Leeds Bradford
  • Glasgow
  • Edinburgh
  • Newcastle
  • Bristol
  • Cardiff

This is not a final ranking yet. The first step is collecting accurate practical notes and public corrections before publishing a scored version.

Community input wanted

If your mosque, ISoc, family, or travel group regularly uses a UK airport for Umrah, send us:

  • which airport you use
  • what worked well
  • what caused stress
  • prayer room or quiet space notes
  • family or elderly traveller observations
  • route or airline connection comments
  • any public airport resource links we should check

Where community input helps shape the index, we may credit the organisation or community group that contributed the practical note.

Why this is linkable

Mosques, ISocs, student unions, local Muslim groups, and airport resource pages can use the index to help people choose a practical departure route, not just the cheapest fare.
