Birmingham and West Midlands Umrah Planning Checklist

A practical resource for Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Solihull, Leicester, and wider Midlands families comparing Umrah travel.

  • Flights
  • Hotels
  • Ziyaraat
  • Guidance
  • Pricing

This free checklist is for West Midlands pilgrims, mosque volunteers, student societies, family organisers, and community groups helping people compare Umrah options before they pay a deposit.

It is not a sales contract or a promise of live pricing. It is a practical planning resource to help travellers ask better questions about airports, flights, hotels, protection, family needs, and Shia-aware support.

Who this checklist is for

  • Families comparing Birmingham Airport, Manchester, and London departures
  • Mosque or community volunteers answering basic Umrah planning questions
  • Students helping parents or relatives prepare for Umrah
  • First-time pilgrims who want a simpler way to compare quotes
  • Shia travellers who need practical room for Tawaf al-Nisa, ziyarat, and marja-aware preparation
  • Elderly pilgrims or mixed-age groups where walking distance and transfer strain matter

Quick Birmingham Umrah checklist

Before requesting a quote, write down:

  • preferred travel month or date range
  • number of adults, children, and elderly travellers
  • rooming needs: twin, triple, quad, family room, or separate rooms
  • preferred airport: Birmingham Airport first, Manchester acceptable, London acceptable
  • maximum domestic travel time before the international flight
  • hotel-distance priority in Makkah and Madinah
  • meal preference and budget lane
  • wheelchair, medical, mobility, or medication needs
  • whether the group needs Shia-aware guidance, ziyarat support, or extra preparation time
  • whether flights must be ATOL protected when included

Birmingham Airport vs Manchester

Birmingham Airport can be the best starting point when convenience matters. Manchester can still be worth comparing when it offers better timings, wider airline choice, or a meaningful saving after the extra road journey.

OptionWhy it can workWatch-outsBest for
Birmingham AirportShorter local journey for West Midlands families, easier drop-off, less pre-flight fatigueRoute choice can be narrower in some monthsFamilies, elderly travellers, groups with children
Manchester AirportOften broader long-haul choice and strong one-stop routesExtra drive, parking, coach, or hotel-before-flight costFlexible adults and groups comparing value
London airportsWide route choice and sometimes strong faresLongest domestic movement for many Midlands familiesFit, flexible travellers when the saving is substantial

The true cost of an airport choice

Do not compare only the airline fare. Add:

  • fuel, train, coach, taxi, or parking cost
  • extra hotel night near the airport if needed
  • time off work for the domestic journey
  • strain on elderly parents or children
  • risk from tight connections or late-night arrival
  • baggage and transfer complexity

A cheaper airport can become more expensive if it adds stress, missed sleep, or avoidable risk for the group.

Family and elderly traveller checks

For families and elderly pilgrims, ask:

  • How far is each hotel from the Haram on foot?
  • Is the walking route flat, crowded, or difficult at prayer times?
  • What time does the group land in Jeddah or Madinah?
  • Are transfers private, shared, or group coach?
  • Is there enough rest after arrival before the first major activity?
  • Who in the group is responsible for elderly relatives?
  • Are wheelchair needs, medication, and medical notes prepared before travel?

Hotel star rating helps, but walking distance and practical access often matter more on the ground.

Booking and payment checks

Before paying:

  • Confirm the travel company name and who is responsible for the package.
  • Ask whether flights are included and ATOL protected.
  • Get hotel names, rooming, meal basis, and walking distance in writing.
  • Ask what is confirmed and what may change.
  • Check cancellation terms and payment schedule.
  • Avoid large payments without a written itinerary and protection details.
  • Keep receipts, booking references, and emergency contact details.

For package travel with flights, protection matters. A low headline price is not enough if the paperwork is unclear.

Shia-aware Birmingham planning

Many Midlands Shia families want an Umrah package that is practical and spiritually prepared. The phrase “Shia package” should mean more than a label.

Ask:

  • Is the itinerary Madinah-first, Makkah-first, or flexible?
  • Is there time and guidance for Tawaf al-Nisa where relevant?
  • Are ziyarat visits realistic for the trip length and group pace?
  • Can travellers ask practical Shia preparation questions before departure?
  • Does the schedule work for elderly family members?
  • Are marja-specific questions handled carefully, with pilgrims directed to their own scholar where needed?
